abstract

  • Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a type of extracorporeal support for circulatory support for children or adults with severe cardiorespiratory dysfunction; The use of ECMO after surgical correction of congenital heart disease has continued to increase steadily despite the fact that there are no widely established criteria governing its use and the results are variable, depending on the population and the type of heart disease intervened for this is great. It is important to know the clinical outcomes of these patients. Methods: 48 pediatric patients were included, the totality of the cases submitted to ECMO in the immediate POP for correction of congenital heart disease of the Fundación Cardioinfantil in the period from March 2014 to October 2019. Results: It was found that within the population age showed a non-normal distribution, with a median of 15.5 months, in addition to the fact that the underlying heart disease most frequently admitted to ECMO in the correction POP was tetralogy of fallot. corresponding to 18% of the sample and regarding the clinical descent evidenced in this population, it was found that the prevalent condition when exiting ECMO was live patients in 85.4% (n: 41) compared with dead patients after leaving ECMO that corresponded to 14.6% (n: 7) and upon leaving hospitalization the total statistics varied from 64.6% (n: 31) alive compared to 35.4% (n: 17) dead. Conclusion, the relevance that ECMO therapy has taken in recent years and its implementation in POP for the correction of congenital heart disease to offer an alternative takes more and more weight in our environment and in comparison with international statistics we find ourselves in agreement in regarding the demographic characteristics and clinical outcomes of this group of patients.
