  • The objective of this study is to analyze the challenges inside of the Colombian Political System to achieve compliance with the Palermo Protocol, specifically in regards to trafficking of persons for sexual exploitation, between 2003 and 2014. First of all, this paper states that all these challenges are both political and legal, when taking into account the manner international treaties are fulfilled, the obligations they imply and the actors who have to comply with those treaties. Furthermore, there are also serious institutional and organizational challenges, since in Colombia not only does this kind of trafficking lacks a clear organizational structure, but the coordination between state institutions and non- governmental entities is scarce as well. In this respect, this research has a multidisciplinary approach that includes elements of Public International Law and International Relations. To do this, this case study will make a qualitative analysis through the study of available of data and academic literature concerning the trafficking of persons for sexual exploitation in Colombia, in order to understand the development of this phenomenon in Colombia.
