abstract

  • Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has been a technological advance in the area of gastroenterology in the last 50 years, redefining the treatment of patients with biliopancreatic diseases. Within its arsenal, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are described that allow the exploration of the bile duct, the taking of biopsies and the resolution of the obstruction. In Colombia, despite the existence of high-volume centers, the characterization of the population and the results is infrequent. As the Hospital Universitario Mayor is a reference center where more than 300 procedures are performed per year, a description of the population and the outcomes obtained in two years of experience will be made. Objective: To characterize the intraoperative aspects and the results obtained in the performance of retrograde endoscopic cholangiography. Methods: Observational, descriptive study of patients undergoing ERCP between 2015 and 2016. The demographic, clinical and paraclinical information, the findings of the procedure, were analyzed. Bivariate analysis was performed to explore risk factors associated with the presence of complications and clinical conditions. Results: 610 ERCP were performed in 2 years. Half of the population were women, with an average of 66 years. The main indication was choledocholithiasis 73.4%. Deep canalization was achieved in 86.1% and the overall success of the procedure reached 78.7%. The complication rate was 4.5%, the most frequent being post-ERCP pancreatitis in 2%. Two deaths associated with the procedure were recorded. Conclusion: The findings of the study are comparable with high-volume centers not only at the local level but also those found in the world literature.
