abstract

  • Background: The management of the airway is a challenge in the management of the surgical patient, the predictors of difficult airway should be evaluated in advance to generate an alert, seeking to reduce adverse events. With the rise of Ultrasound, new predictors have emerged and need to be described in our population. Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study with exploratory characteristics was carried out, describing the physical characteristics that are evaluated in the airway in the pre-anesthetic evaluation, to then take ultrasound measurements of the airway and relate them to ventilation and laryngoscopy. Results: 80 patients were recruited, classified with ASA risk I and II, finding a mean age of 44 years, with Direct Laryngoscopy with Cormack-Lehane I and II, finding ultrasound measurements of the distance from the skin to the Hyoid (DPH) of 0.78 cm, distance from the skin to the epiglottis (DPEP) of 1.72 cm and the distance from the skin to the anterior commissure (DPCA) of 0.79 cm. Relating them to the Cormack-Lehane we find differences between DPH and DPE, which is consistent with what is reported in the literature. Discussion: The present study characterized the patients taken to outpatient surgery, from the physical evaluation and the ultrasound evaluation, finding significant differences and highlighting the importance of the use of ultrasound in the evaluation of the airway.
