abstract

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most frequent cancer neoplasms in the world, with an increasing number of cases related to this disease; the establishment of the transplant allowed in these patients in early or intermediate stage to provide a cure and an overall survival greater than 5 years; however, the limited resource of organs has made it necessary to create bridging therapies either while the procedure is being performed or to bring those masses without the possibility of early intervention to the Milan criteria. Objective: To describe the main clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients diagnosed with hepatocarcinoma, who were treated with chemoembolization as a bridging therapy to liver transplantation. Methods: Descriptive retrospective/historical cohort study over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of hepatocarcinoma who met the inclusion criteria and were managed at the Fundación Cardioinfantil between 2014 and 2018. Sociodemographic variables were described, as well as associated and treatment-related comorbidities. Results 159 patients who met the inclusion criteria were identified, the average age range was between 62 to 73 years, it was evidenced that weight, BMI and ECOG represented variables that showed a difference between those who died and those who did not die; In addition, there was no difference between the number of chemoembolizations and mortality.
