abstract

  • Introduction: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome, in which anterograde amnesia is abruptly established, which resolves in less than 24 hours. Currently, the diagnosis is made with standardized clinical criteria. Characteristic findings have been described in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), whose usefulness in the diagnostic process is still debated. Objectives: To describe the characteristics of patients with clinical suspicion of TGA and its diagnostic approach, with emphasis on magnetic resonance images (MRI). Methodology: Descriptive study of 130 patients treated at Hospital Universitario Mayor-Méderi with suspicion of TGA between 2014 and 2018. Results: Of 130 patients with suspicion of TGA, 106 (82%) had a confirmatory diagnosis. The median age was 65 years, with an interquartile range (IQR) of 13 years, 81 (76%) were women and the event had a median duration of 4 hours (IQR = 5 hours). 48 (45%) of 106 patients did not meet the clinical criteria. MRI was performed in 69 patients and 47 (68%) were positive. The technical factors that increased the detection of hippocampal lesions in MRI were the completion of the study between 24 and 84 hours (p = 0.001, 95% CI: 2.15-21.9) and the size of the matrix of 192 x 192 pixels (p = 0.02, 95% CI: 1.18-9.8). Conclusions: The variables assessed were similar to those reported in the literature reviewed. The technical factors that most affected the detection of hippocampal lesions were the time of the study and the size of the matrix.
