  • Organic solvents are chemicals that their physicochemical properties are easily inhaled or absorbed through the skin, can cause varying degrees of damage on health. In Colombia there are regulations covering the protection measures, however the informal sector persists in car painters, whereby workers exposed to long-term health may be affected. In this study the relationship between individuals occupationally exposed to organic solvents versus unexposed with respect to the length of their telomeres and weaknesses formation was analyzed. Blood samples taken by veinpuncture, collected in two tubes were used: one with Heparin, for cultivation of lymphocytes, for metaphase chromosomes and evaluate them for the presence of fragility; the other tube with EDTA, was used for DNA extraction and used to obtain the values ​​of telomere length by the technique of quantitative PCR. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Wilcoxon rank test, in the case of the presence of fragility reason No.Fragilidades / No.Metafases was analyzed using the Wilcoxon method was found that there is statistically significant difference between exposed and unexposed (p = 0.036), where an increased frequency of exposed weaknesses. Moreover, the relative value of telomere length exposed group was higher than that observed in the unexposed group, this difference was statistically significant (Wilcoxon, p = 0.002).
