abstract

  • Introduction: Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection that has a major impact among the population with immunosuppression and it is estimated that it exceeds 220,000 cases per year. In Colombia, the notification of this disease is not mandatory, so the epidemiological data are limited. Objective: characterize the sociodemographic, clinical and laboratory factors of patients with cryptococcosis treated at the Fundación Cardioinfantil in the period 2011-2021. Methods: 46 adults with Cryptococcus spp infection were identified during the proposed period; sociodemographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics were analyzed; a comparison was made between patients with and without HIV infection. Results: HIV infection was the condition most frequently associated with cryptococcosis (37%), followed by the use of steroids (26.5%). The most frequent form of presentation was meningoencephalitis and the most important clinical manifestations included headache (48.9%) and altered state of consciousness (40%); about half of the patients had coinfections of various etiologies. It was identified that in patients with conditions of immunosuppression other than HIV, the female sex predominates, there is a higher frequency of abnormalities in the chest X-ray, there are more disseminated and extrameningeal forms, and a higher mortality. Conclusion: It was identified that patients with cryptococcosis and immunosuppression conditions other than HIV infection have worse clinical results; this highlights the importance of early recognition of the disease in high-risk populations and thus enable timely treatment that improves outcomes.
