abstract

  • Introduction: Bacterial meningitis is a frequent pathology in children that, when not properly diagnosed and treated, can have a lethality of 100 percent. Its etiology and clinical characteristics may vary depending on the region where the disease appears. There is no data on the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with meningitis at the Colsubsidio Children's Clinic. Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and the outcome of hospitalized pediatric patients with a confirmed diagnosis of bacterial meningitis at the Colsubsidio Children's Clinic between 2008 and 2017. Methodology: Observational and retrospective study of a series of cases at the Colsubsidio Children's Clinic in Bogotá in the period between 2008 and 2017. Results: 28 patients were included. The median age was 6 months. Most patients had an incomplete vaccination scheme and nonspecific signs suggesting neuro-infection. The main infectious agent was Streptococcus pneumoniae (32.1%), however, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) predominated in children under one year (61%) in 47.1%. All patients received bi-conjugated antibiotic management, the case fatality was of 7.1%, and 33.5% required some neurosurgical intervention. Conclusion: Meningitis continues to be a severe infection in our population. Vaccination has decreased the global frequency of pneumococcus and Hib; however, meningitis remains as the main cause of neuro-infection in children. The clinical characteristics retrieved are similar to those reported in other Latin American series of pediatric meningitis.
