  • The article addresses the history of women in Colombian medicine since 1920, with the first female doctor graduated in Colombia, until 1970, when the first women entered medical specialties. There are few academic papers that deal with this history reconstructed by women. A review of documentary archives and semi-structured interviews were used as a qualitative research method to analyze this history crossed by social, economic, religious and political tensions that have influenced the role of women in Colombian medicine. The delay in the entry of women to the liberal professions such as medicine had several factors: the delay in educational reforms in secondary and university education, the control of the Church in education and society that excluded women from education and he limited it to the space of the private. With the rise to the power of liberalism, he promoted the educational and civil rights reforms that opened the doors for the entry of women into the liberal professions such as Medicine. The participation of women in different magazines and forums promoted reforms in education and the acquisition of their civil rights. They stood out for their character, discipline, effort, and the support of their families. Many women pioneered and promoted Public Health in different regions of the country. He entered the medical specialties has been framed by beliefs, roles and spaces forbidden for women, but which they have transformed.
