abstract

  • The performing arts are a place of inclusion for people with disabilities, but sometimes in this field there is a pigeonholing of roles for such people. Therefore, this research analyzes the relationship between being an artist with disabilities and the world of performing arts from the configuration of notions of inclusion-pigeonholing. For the fulfillment of this objective, the research methodology selected for this work is qualitative in nature within the framework of an ethnography/auto ethnography; using semi-structured interviews, body mapping, life and professional stories, and participant observations. The work was carried out following the experiences of people with: short stature, blindness, low vision and other physical disabilities. In addition to some people without disabilities, all belonging to the performing arts in the framework of arts such as performance, dance and music. Now, this study seeks to contribute to a social analysis on the inclusion of people with disabilities in the performing arts and the tensions regarding the role that these people can play and the pigeonholing in which they may be immersed. This is important, because from anthropology (studies related to disability, body, inclusion, pigeonholing and arts), I am interested in drawing attention to the heterogeneity that exists in the world of performing arts, specifically for people with disabilities and, therefore, the skills and challenges they may be immersed in and that have been little considered.
