abstract

  • This document offers an analysis of the perceptions that exist about the problem of breast cancer and in turn collects information on the psychosocial situation of women who have suffered this type of cancer. To do this, first, a theoretical and conceptual review will be made on the construction of concepts such as gender and body in the light of breast cancer, which is considered a public health problem. At the same time, it is possible to show that types of inequalities and differences are present in the pathological sequelae that leaves this disease.Breast cancer is a growing problem not only in Colombia but throughout the world. Global incidence rates in developing countries have increased over the last two to three decades making this type of cancer a public health issue and drawing the attention of the vast majority of nations. In developed countries, which historically had the highest rates of incidence, they have gradually been reduced thanks to strong efforts in awareness raising, timely diagnosis and improvement in treatment. In this way, the project seeks to make a qualitative and quantitative analysis that accounts for the perceptions that revolve around this disease, and the psychosocial situation of women who have had breast cancer. It is essential to work with women who have lived through this experience and to reconstruct the course of the disease and then focus on the rehabilitation and incorporation process. The work collects the information of surviving women, some social perceptions about the disease and an analysis of campaigns focused on the problem. In this way it was possible to characterize and deepen the knowledge of this disease.
