abstract

  • Cancer represents a health problem worldwide and Colombia is no exception. Incidence and mortality statistics show a large presence of this disease in the country, with breast cancer being one of the types with the highest occurrence. This disease is mediated by the place of residence or by social representations of certain physical characteristics such as breasts, etc. Therefore, cancer is not only a medical problem; it is a disruptive event that is inscribed in the social space. Against this background, this research is located in the framework of medical anthropology together with gender studies, as it sought to analyze how the relationship between health, disease and femininity is configured in the light of a disruptive event such as breast cancer. This research was carried out with women belonging to “La Liga Colombiana contra el Cáncer”. Based on this analysis, the research proposes that, in effect, the appearance of breast cancer in a woman constitutes a disruptive event in numerous aspects of her life: experiencing breast cancer leads to emotional and social forms of relationship with her environment; in addition to the reflection on her identity and femininity related to her corporeality. Together with the above, a simultaneous state of health-illness is established inside, which through biographical disruption allows rethinking aspects such as the social construction of cancer
